Established in 2023, the Center for Investment Management (CIM) cultivates students' investing competencies and strengthens the network with the finance industry. While CIM is based at HKU Business School (HKUBS), we take an interdisciplinary approach and participants from all HKU Faculties are welcome.
At the core of CIM is a two-year program where students manage stock portfolios as part of experiential learning. In the first year, students serve as junior portfolio managers; in the second year, subject to a positive evaluation, they advance to a senior portfolio manager position.
CIM takes a disciplined, multi-factor approach to equity investing. We combine fundamental analysis---evaluating financial health, growth trends, and valuations---with technical analysis to identify stocks in confirmed uptrends and time entries and exits. All investment decisions are underpinned by rigorous risk management, including stop-loss orders and systematic position sizing.
We do paper trading, but treat each trade with the same seriousness as real capital. Every trade is recorded on GitHub as part of our commitment to transparency and open-source practices.
CIM members are organized into eleven industry groups covering the major sectors of the equity market: Technology, Healthcare, Financials, Consumer Discretionary, Consumer Staples, Industrials, Energy, Utilities, Materials, Telecommunications, and Real Estate.
Each industry group manages its own portfolio, maintains a watchlist of potential investments, and presents performance updates on a rotational basis during weekly meetings.
In addition to their industry group, every member belongs to one of three functional groups:
At CIM, we believe the market is the best teacher---but you need to know how to listen. Our core learning loop is:
This iterative process is what turns experience into skill. Losing trades, analyzed rigorously, often provide the greatest learning opportunities.
